Early Years Foundation Stage

The Early Years Foundation Stage caters for children in nursery and reception classes from 3 to 5 years of age. In the EYFS children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. Children are given the broad range of knowledge and skills that provide the right foundation for good future prospects through school and life.

Key Stages 1 and 2

Key Stages 1 and 2 offers a broad, relevant, creative and engaging curriculum taught through a topic based approach using the Cornerstones Curriculum, a nationally recognised approach for delivering outstanding learning opportunities for children. The phonics scheme of work used in the school is Phonics Play. At Grovelands we focus on the Core skills in English, Maths, Science and Computing.

What is the Cornerstones Curriculum?

The Cornerstones Curriculum is a creative and thematic approach to learning that is mapped to the 2014 Primary National Curriculum to ensure comprehensive coverage of national expectations. Our new curriculum is delivered through Imaginative Learning Projects (ILPs) which provide a rich menu of exciting and motivating learning activities that make creative links between all aspects of our children’s learning.

We believe children learn better when they are encouraged to use their imagination and apply their learning to engaging contexts. Our new curriculum provides lots of problems, apply themselves creatively and express their knowledge and learning challenges throughout the academic year that will require children to solve understanding effectively across the curriculum.

Cornerstones also provide a rigorous essential skills framework that outlines the end of year expectations in all subjects. These essential skills are tied to activities and are age related so that staff can track children’s progress and identify their individual learning needs.

RE and SMSC

We follow Surrey's agreed syllabus for Religious Education, which covers the primary faiths practiced around the world.

We aim to enable children to gain knowledge and understanding of the most important aspects of religion, such as an appreciation for the beliefs of others and respect for both themselves and those in our community, our country and around the world.

We are a Values Based School and our SMSC (Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural) values are embedded in all areas across the curriculum, our whole school worship and the way we model our behaviour policy with our children.

PSHE

Personal, Social and Health education is taught through a wide range of approaches across the year groups as appropriate, and through its teaching children gain the knowledge, skills and understanding required to become responsible members of the community.
