Values Based Education

During the summer term the staff and governors made the decision that we would join a number of other local schools such as Oatlands and Ashley to become a Values Based School.

This means that from the beginning of this academic year we will be introducing 22 universally positive values over a period of 2 years. Using a wide range of activities, lessons and events, our children will be encouraged to consider what the values mean to them, their families and their friends.

It is hoped that by thinking and learning about values, the children will acquire a solid foundation on which to base their future actions, decisions and judgements, so they may become happy, fulfilled individuals who are able to make positive contributions to the community.

We believe that Values Based Education will:

  • Encourage all of us to be the best that we can be.
  • Provide a moral framework.
  • Encourage reflective and ethical thinking.
  • Help us to better understand and articulate the impact our behaviour can have on our friends, our school and our community.
  • Strengthen our sense of belonging.

Thank you so much to all the parents who attended our Family Values Workshop on Wednesday 9th March, after school. It was a unique opportunity for children to sit alongside their parents to design some creative interpretations of our school values. It was really good to share with you how our Values programme is woven into the fabric of all we do at Grovelands and it was lovely to hear how many of you are extending discussions around the Value of the Month at home. Mrs Dodds has kept all of your artwork and is looking to see how we can transfer your designs into permanent displays.

Our value for the month of May is trust and honesty. In school we have been talking about how honesty is a clear conscience and means not blaming others for our actions. Honesty brings trust, we have talked about the people who we trust to be there for us and to take care of us. The children love the focus that our Values based Education brings and are engaging fully with the moral responsibilities that each value reflects. Please talk about truth and honesty at home, it will be interesting to see what definitions the children come up with!
